About Us

Everything you need to know about us

Welcome to Midlife Hikers!

We are a friendly and welcoming group, aimed at people in their 40s and 50s. We mainly walk in North and East Yorkshire and the surrounding areas and our walks generally range from 8 to 15 miles. We hold social events throughout the year such as pub meet-ups, meals out and other outdoor activities. We also organise walking weekends at various points throughout the year, where we venture further afield as a group.

The group is part of the East Yorkshire and Derwent Area. You can also follow us on Facebook.

Walks

We have 3 or 4 walks a month at weekends, ranging from easier mid-length walks to challenging hikes, along with some shorter mid-week evening walks during the summer. Each year, we will take on a long-distance walk in the area, and complete it as a series of day stages over the summer.

Come along and give us a try! If you aren't already a Ramblers member, you're welcome to come on up to 3 walks to check us out before we ask you to join the Ramblers.

Socials & Weekend trips

We have a variety of social events throughout the year ranging from pub meets and meals out to bowling nights, an escape room and whatever else our members come up with!

Each year we host two or three weekends away, allowing us to explore further afield. Some trips we'll be staying in youth hostels, and in others we'll have somewhere more upmarket, so there will be a trip for every budget.

Origin story

Launched at the start of January 2025, Midlife Hikers is the Ramblers group for people in their 40s and 50s across York, Hull, North Yorkshire and the East Riding. As we go into our second year, we have grown to over 90 members – some who have moved up from Get Your Boots On as their 40th birthday is receding to a distant memory but many others who were new to Ramblers and welcomed the opportunity to walk with people of a similar age.

The group came about because many of us have walked for years with Get Your Boots On, which since its launch in 2002 has given walkers in their 20s and 30s the chance to join Ramblers and walk and socialise with other people of their own age – and while GYBO has always welcomed people who are outside that age range, for a long time we had been conscious that we didn't want to lose what made the group distinctive and appealing to younger people by having ever more members in their 40s and 50s. With more and more of us regular members over 40, the time was right to move on and create a new group, and we hope will continue to attract lots of new members who didn't previously have an obvious group to walk with.

Volunteer with us!

We're a Ramblers group run by volunteers who we rely on to keep it going. There are lots of ways to get involved, so if you'd like to lead a walk, organise a social or support the committee, we'd love to hear from you!
